Common Wealth Games 2018 (officially known as the XXI Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Gold Coast 2018) is taking place in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. Common Wealth Games 2018 – Introduction

Commonwealth Games is an international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth Nations. CWG takes place every four years. It is the fifth time Australia has hosted the Commonwealth Games. The Motto of CWG 2018 is “Share the Dream“. It is chosen to highlight the dreams and experience of the games that are shared by participants, volunteers and the host country Australia to the world including the commonwealth nations.

Borobi was named as the mascot for Commonwealth Games 2018. Borobi is a blue koala, with indigenous markings on its body. The term ‘Borobi’ is an Aboriginal term for Koala. The emblem of the Commonwealth Games 2018 is a silhouette of the skyline and landscape of Gold Coast, the host city of the games.

CWG 2018 welcomed more than 6,600 athletes and team officials from 71 Commonwealth nations and territories to the Gold Coast and event cities Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville, to share in the celebration of sport, entertainment and culture.

Newly Added Sports to Common Wealth Games 2018

• Beach Volleyball, Para Triathlon and Women’s Rugby Sevens will make their Commonwealth Games debuts and for the first time at a Commonwealth Games. Men’s and Women’s will have an equal number of the medals. This marks the first time in history that a major multi-sport event has equality in terms of events. 275 events in 18 sports are being contested in total.
• The program is broadly similar to that of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The major changes being the dropping of judo, the reintroduction of basketball, the debut of women’s rugby sevens and beach volleyball.
• CWG is the largest sporting event to be staged in Australia this decade. CWG 2018 will feature the largest integrated sports program in Commonwealth Games history, comprising 18 sports and seven Para-sports.

Features of Common Wealth Games 2018

• The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) was established in January 2012.
• Gold Coast 2018 Queen’s Baton Relay was launched on Commonwealth Day, 13 March 2017. It was launched on the historic forecourt at Buckingham Palace, signaling the official countdown to the start of the Games.
• Queen’s Baton Relay was the longest in Commonwealth Games history, Covering 230,000 km over 388 days. Baton made its way through the six Commonwealth regions of Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and Oceania.
• London, England hosted the First Commonwealth Games in 1911.
• Glasgow, Scotland hosted Commonwealth Games 2014 under the motto “People, Place, and Passion”. England topped the medal tally with total 174 Medals (58 Gold’s).
• Birmingham, England will now host 2022 Commonwealth Games. It will no longer take place in Durban, South Africa as the South African Government failed to give financial guarantees for the event. The Motto of commonwealth games is Humanity Equality Destiny.

Key Features of Common Wealth Games Hosted by India

• Delhi hosted the Commonwealth Games 2010, officially known as the XIX Commonwealth Games. They took place from 3 to 14 October 2010.
• CGF General Assembly in Montego Bay, Jamaica selected Delhi to host 2010 Commonwealth Games on 14 November 2003.
• Ganapathy Bharat directed the opening ceremony at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
• Logo of the 2010 Commonwealth Games is an image of Chakra, India’s national symbol of freedom. It stands for unity and power. The logo consists of six colors which are green, red, yellow, blue, purple and pink. Green represents life, energy, high spirits. Purple represents reassurance, mystery and excitement. Red represents unity. Furthuremore, Yellow represents destiny and blue represents equality while pink represents luxury and surprise.
• The official mascot for the 2010 Commonwealth Games is Shera, an anthropomorphized tiger. Idiom Design and Consulting designed this logo.
• The Official song of the Games was “Jiyo Utho Bado Jeeto”. Indian musician A.R. Rahman composed the Official Song.
• Come out and Play was the official motto for 2010 Commonwealth Games. It represented the invitation of the athletes from the Commonwealth member countries to participate in the games and achieve success.
• Total of 6081 athletes from 71 Commonwealth nations and dependencies competed in 21 sports and 272 events, making it the largest Commonwealth Games to date.
• Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium hosted the Opening and closing ceremonies.
• Events took place at 12 competition venues.  CWG had a total of 20 training venues.
• The final medal tally was led by Australia. The host nation India achieved its best performance ever at the Games, finishing second overall.
• The games closed on 14 October 2010 in a colorful closing ceremony featuring both Indian and Scottish performers. In the closing ceremony, the President of the Commonwealth Games Federation declared that Delhi had hosted a “truly exceptional Games”.
