Educational Qualification: Candidates should have passed Graduation Degree in any stream from recognised university/college. |
Age Limit: Born between 02-01-1996 and 01-01-2001 |
Selection Process: Selection of candidates will be made on the basis of Written Examination and Main Examination. |
Application Fee: General/OBC candidates have to pay Rs. 200 through online mode using Net-banking/Credit or Debit Card/E-Challan. SC/ST candidates don’t have to pay any fee. |

CDS Exam Pattern 2019 for OTA, INA, IMA, IAFA
Candidates should note that the CDS exam pattern of IMA (Indian Military Academy), INA (Indian Naval Academy) and IAFA (Indian Air Force Academy) is same and there is a slight change in the CDS exam pattern of OTA (Officers Training Academy).

Important Details of the CDS Exam Pattern:
- The exam of CDS will be offline, i.e. through pen and paper mode.
- The question paper of Mathematics and General Knowledge will be set bilingually, i.e. in Hindi as well as English.
- All the tests will consist of objective type questions only.
- English and General Knowledge sections will comprise of 120 questions each, while the Mathematics section would contain 100 questions.
- There is a penalty for every wrong answer. 1/3rd marks will be deducted for every incorrect answer marked by the candidate.
- The help of scribe will not be permitted to write the answers in the exam under any circumstance.
CDS Syllabus 2019 for OTA, INA, IMA, IAFA
Here is the syllabus of CDS exam for each individual section:
1. English Syllabus for CDS Exam
The aim of this section is to test the understanding of English as well as word usage by the candidates. Questions in this section will be asked from the following topics:
- Fill in the blanks
- Reading Comprehension
- Vocabulary (Synonyms/ Antonyms/ Phrases)
- Sentence Rearrangement (Jumbled sentences)
- Spotting Error
- Sentence Improvement/ Correction
2. General Knowledge Syllabus for CDS Exam
This section aims to check how well the candidates keep up with the current events and how well they understand their surroundings, especially in reference to their scientific aspects.
Under the GK section, students need to study the following topics thoroughly:
- Latest Current Affairs
Cover news of important international and national summits/ conferences, awards, sports-related news, books, and authors etc. - Indian Polity
Important facts of the Indian constitution, fundamental rights, and directive principles, powers of the president and prime minister, constitutional bodies, Indian judiciary etc. - History of India
Questions may be asked from Ancient, Medieval and Modern India. - Indian Geography
Prepare important facts of Indian as well as world geography. - Economy of India
Prepare topics like Budget, Five-year plan, foreign trade etc. - General Science
1. Questions in this section will be asked from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
2. In Physics, focus on topics like optics, motion, force, units, heat, electricity, temperature etc.
3. In Chemistry, prepare important topics of organic, inorganic, physical and general chemistry.
4. In Biology, focus on the topics of important diseases, botany, zoology as well as human biology. - Defense-related news
Questions in this section may be asked from important defence related topics like Army Day, Navy Day, recent developments etc. - International Organisations
Prepare important facts of IMF, WHO, World Bank, UN, BRICS, SAARC etc.
3. Elementary Mathematics Syllabus for CDS Exam
Questions in the mathematics section will be asked from Arithmetic, Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Mensuration, and Statistics. Here are the details of the topics which will be covered under these sub-sections:
(a) Arithmetic
Number System (natural, integers, rational & real numbers), Fundamental operations (subtraction, addition, division, multiplication), Unitary method, Percentages, Time & Work, Simple & Compound Interest, Time & distance, Ratio & proportion, Profit & loss, Elementary number theory, Composite & prime numbers, Divisibility tests, Theorem of factorisation, Factors & multiples, Euclidean algorithm, laws of algorithm & algorithmic tables.
(b) Algebra
Basic operations, Remainder theorem, L.C.M. & H.C.F., Polynomial theories, Quadratic equations (relation between roots & its coefficients), Linear equations in 2 variables, Set language and set notation, Laws of indices, Conditional identities, Rational Expressions.
(c) Trigonometry
All about Sine a, Cos a, Tan a when 0° < a < 90°, Sin, Cos and Tan values of important angles like 0°, 30°, 45°, 60° and 90°, Simple trigonometric identities, Trigonometric tables, Cases of heights and distance.
(d) Geometry
Plane & plane figures, Lines, and angles, Important theorems (like angle property based, parallel lines, congruency of triangles, medians & altitudes, Similar triangles, Parallelogram, circles, rectangle, square etc.
(e) Mensuration
Areas of circles, triangles, rectangles, squares, parallelograms etc, Volume and Surface area of cuboids, cones, cylinders, spheres.
(f) Statistics
Tabulation of statistical data, the graphical representation of frequency polygons, bar graphs, histograms, pie charts, measures of central tendency.

CDS 2018 Cutoff (Expected)

UPSC CDS caters more than 200,000 students every session for total seats of around 400 spread across IMA, INA, AFA and OTA. This reduces the success ratio to a meagre 0.2%. CDS 1 2017 Cutoff
UPSC conducted CDS on February 4, 2018 this year. The level of written was moderate and will be followed by intense 5-day Psycho-physical test at Service Selection Boards spread across the country. To determine the cut off for this year, we must rely on the previous years’ cut off as well. Here, in the table given below, find the cut off for CDS 1 2017 as released by UPSC. - Due to restructuring of Officers cadre on recommendation of AVS committee, promotion period has been reduced and time scale promotions has been increased upto the rank of Col (equivalent) and rank of Lt. Col (TS) has been abolished Col (TS) (equivalent) is entitled to Grade pay of Rs 8700/-
- A fixed sum of Rs 6000/- is also payable as Military Service (MSP) to officers from LT. to Brig.
Training Stipend
All the candidates who gets commissioned through CDS exam will get stipend during the training days. You will get 21000 as fixed Stipend which includes 15,600/- as pay in Pay Band plus Grade Pay of 5,400/- for the entire duration of training.
Qualification Pay and Grant
Officers possessing certain prescribed qualifications are entitled to lumpsum Qualification Grant of 6,000/-, 9,000/-, 15,000/- or 20,000/- based on the qualification held by them.
The Indian Army Aviators (Pilots ) serving in Army Aviation Corps are entitled to the Qualification Pay, based on the Qualification held by them as under :

- Senior Aviation Instructor Class II Rs 280/- p.m.

The Indian Army Aviators ( Pilots ) serving in the Army Aviation Corps are entitled to flying allowance as under :

CDS Allowances:

- Dearness Allowances are admissible at the same rates and under the same conditions as are applicable to the Civilian Gazetted Officers from time to time.

- A kit maintenance allowance of Rs 400/- p.m.

- . Depending upon rank and area of posting, officers posted to Field Areas will be eligible for compensatory Highly active Field Area Allowance at the rate of Rs 6,780/- to Rs 8,400/- p.m., Compensatory Field Area Allowance at the rate of Rs 4,200/- to Rs 5,200/- p.m. and Compensatory Modified Field Area Allowance at the rate of Rs 1,600/- to Rs 2,000/- p.m.

- In addition to the Compensatory Field Area Allowance, officers posted to areas situated at a height of 9,000 ft and above are entitled for High Altitude Allowance in the range of Rs 1,060/- PM to Rs 11,200/- PM depending upon rank of the officer and place of posting.

- Siachen Allowance at the rate of Rs 14,000/- per month will be admissible in addition to Compensatory Field Area allowance to officers of all ranks. This allowance is, however, not admissible in conjunction with High Altitude / Uncongenial climate allowance.
- Uniform Allowance: Initial allowance for a one time kit @ Rs 14,000/- and Rs 3,000/- for every three years.

- Free rations are provided to all officers

- Transport Allowance: Transport allowance @ Rs 3,200/- + DA thereon per month in A-1 / A Class cities and Rs 1,600/- + DA thereon per month at other places shall be admissible to officers.

- In the case of allowances specific to Defence Forces, the rates of these allowances have been further enhanced by 50% as Dearness Allowances has gone up by 100%.
- State Govt. of Sikkim has approved a cash incentive of 1.5 lac ( Rupees One lakh fifty thousand only ) to successful candidates of Sikkim for all Officers entry scheme.
